LIVER ABSCESS

Well defined collection of pus in the liver.

• Bacterial or fungal infection of the liver, most commonly from appendicitis, biliary tract disease or digestive tract. Pathways to reach the liver are the portal vein, hepatic artery or surrounding organs

Patients present to the doctor with pains in the upper abdomen, especially in the right subcostal area with possible radiation generally in the right shoulder. On palpation the pain worsens.
Patients experience these pains for a longer period of time, but the hallmark is the presence of fever throughout the period and lack of appetite followed by weight loss.
The patient feels weak and may show classic signs of jaundice: yellowing of the skin and / or yellowish eyes and severe skin itching.
