JAUNDICE IN PREGNANCY

Definition
The presence of a high level of bilirubin in the blood, with onset during pregnancy.
Cause
- Benign cholestatic jaundice
- Jaundice independent of pregnancy (see causes for jaundice)
Signs and symptoms
Jaundice in pregnancy usually occurs in the third quarter of pregnancy and is manifested by itching, turbid urine and out of colour stools.
There is also the possibility for skin and eyes to become yellowish.
