ASPIRATION PNEUMONIA
Definition
Inflammation of the lungs and airways caused by aspiration of substances or foreign bodies in the mouth or stomach.
Cause
Aspiration into the airways and lungs of substances and foreign bodies which come from mouth or stomach. This risk arises in particular:
- General anesthesia
- Patients in a state of confusion
- People in Coma
- Older people
- People with problems of teeth can not chew food well
- Persons under alcohol or hallucinogenic substances
- Patients with medical sufferings of the esophagus
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Signs and symptoms
In general patients' suffering depends on the amount, texture and size of substances, foreign bodies aspirated.
Respiratory discomfort occurs, possibly a faster pace in breathing, skin color changes to blue from lack of oxygen. Due to lack of oxygen there can also occur palpitations.
Cough starts suddenly and may be accompanied by the elimination of mucus that may contain traces of blood.
In some cases fever may occur.
Pain, in case it is present is felt in the chest.
