CUSHING'S DISEASE

Definition
The disease occurs after increased levels of cortisol (a hormone) in the body.
Cause
- Tumor of the pituitary gland
- Adrenal gland tumor
- Prolonged treatment with corticosteroids
Signs and symptoms
Hypertension, bruises on the skin, poor wound healing, acne, psychiatric disorders, decreased libido, infertility, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, gynecomastia in men and appearance of facial hair growth in women.
The most important sign is abnormal fat distribution especially in the neck, face and abdomen - thus creating the appearance of 'full face' and 'buffalo hump'.
