DIVERTICULITIS

Definition
Inflammation and infection of diverticula in the colon.
Cause
Risk factors:
- Lack of fiber in the diet and age over 40
Signs and symptoms
Patients are generally asymptomatic, and when the disease presents these symptoms they manifest through: abdominal pain (especially on the left side of the abdomen), nausea and possible vomiting when the diverticula become inflamed or tear up.
Patients develop fever in such situations.
Constipation may alternate with diarrhea.
The stool can also contain blood.
Patients may be bloated and have no appetite.
Hygienic-dietary rules
- Drink at least 2 liters of fluid per day
- Dietary fiber: beans, lentils, whole grains, apples, etc
- Regular exercise
